Safety in Every Interaction: Understanding Our Updated Toy Guidelines in 2026

This year, Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) has implemented an update to our Toys on Visits Rule. As always, our goal is to ensure visits remain safe, effective, and meaningful for everyone involved.

Toys can play an important role in animal-assisted therapy, particularly in physical therapy sessions and other therapeutic activities. ATD recognizes the value of these interactions and does not want to limit appropriate therapeutic use. However, to promote safety and minimize the risk of injury, we have clarified when and how toys may be used during visits. Our current ATD Rule reads:

Toys on Visits: A dog is not allowed to carry a toy during a visit. However, a toy is permitted for tricks, but keep the toy out of the dog’s mouth when interacting with people.

ATD teams should not allow their dog to carry a toy throughout the entire visit or while directly interacting with those they are visiting. This guideline helps ensure the safety of patients, residents, staff, and volunteers.

Toys may still be incorporated when performing specific tricks, such as carrying a basket or retrieving an item. However, Handlers must remove the toy from the dog’s mouth before the dog resumes visiting or interacting with individuals.

Can my dog still participate in physical therapy activities, such as fetching a ball?

The ATD Office has received a few questions about dogs continuing to participate in physical therapy activities. Dogs may continue to assist with physical therapy exercises involving retrieving or fetching. ATD simply asks that Handlers remove the ball or toy from the dog’s mouth before handing it to the individual participating in the activity.

Another appropriate option is using a reliable “drop it” cue. The dog may drop the toy onto the ground, allowing the individual to safely pick it up. This small adjustment to your routine can significantly reduce the risk of accidental injury while preserving the therapeutic benefit of the activity.

Commitment to Safety and Excellence

Each year, the ATD Board of Directors carefully reviews our Rules and Regulations, along with feedback and suggestions from our Members. These updates are made with thoughtful consideration to ensure visits remain both safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.

If you have questions about ATD Rules and Regulations or need clarification, the ATD Office is an excellent resource. Our Office Staff is happy to assist you. You can reach the Office by phone or email: 307-432-0272 or office@therapydogs.com.

Thank you for your continued commitment to upholding ATD standards and providing safe, impactful therapy dog visits.
